Captain Marbles makes children laugh while teaching value of teamwork

The children’s’ musical, Captain Marbles and His Acting Squad, which began its New York run in the spring, has been extended to July 25. The multi-generational audience may be one reason. Another may be the disciplined performance of the play’s 10 songs in a tight 60-minute window. There is little opportunity for minds to wander, regardless of age.
The Captain Marbles squad, led by the eponymous Captain Marbles, played by Ivan Perez, loves to act and this common interest brings the six distinct characters together and give them a sense of community. Under the able direction of Kate Gleason, the production’s moral themes develop in a light, witty manner. A key message is that working together produces better results than working alone and perhaps more subtly the importance of good leadership in bringing people together. Both children and adults can benefit from watching the characters stretch their skin (not cosmetically) to look within to find emotional resources.
Written by David Kovacs and William H Macy. Music by Alaric Jans and Lyrics by Alaric Jans and John Stasey. Produced by John Chatterton.
