Comics stand up for Haiti at Carolines Comedy Club

By Carla Baranauckas

The comedy world is ready to stand up for Haiti. So Carolines on Broadway and the hip hop radio station Power 105.1 are joining forces to raise money to help with the disaster relief effort in Haiti by staging a stand-up comedy show on Wednesday night.

Ed Lover, the Power 105.1 DJ who has a regular monthly show at Carolines, will be the host of a program that includes Gilbert Gottfried, Kevin Hart, Jeffrey Ross, Dave Attell, and Capone.

All proceeds from sales of the $35 tickets will benefit Doctors Without Borders and the William J. Clinton Foundation.

Greg Charles, spokesman for the comedy club owned by Caroline Hirsch, agreed that the events in Haiti are no laughing matter. “We’re a comedy club and we deal with comedians all the time,” Mr. Charles said. “That’s our platform to help out. Our primary objective is to help out and this is the way we do it.”

Mr. Charles added that as soon as the idea for the benefit was discussed, Mr. Lover readily agreed to forgo his regular show for January.

“We were not put on this earth to be selfish,” Mr. Lover said in a statement announcing the benefit.  “As the old saying goes:  no man is an island.  No man stands alone.  Each man is my brother.  Each man is my own.  That is why we stand up for the great people of Haiti.”

Ms. Hirsh added, “In difficult times like these I think it’s essential that we lend a helping hand in any way we can.”

Tickets are available online on Carolines Web site or by phone at (212) 757-4100.
